Everything you need to know about Maya Weddings.
We need to remember that Isla Mujeres is located in the area that once belonged to the Mayan Culture, that is why most of their traditions remain. Something incredible is that people from other countries like to honor some of these traditions by celebrating them the way Mayan people used to, a big example of this is reflected in the Maya Weddings.
What does it consist of?
This kind of wedding had been celebrating for more than 3 thousand years; it is full of the symbolism and spirituality that this incredible culture had and marks the connection between the universe, the elements, and the Mayan gods.
These ceremonies have a slight similarity to the catholic ones because it is asked for the couples fortune, prosperity, and their eternal union, also there is an exchange of rings symbolizing an engage and both, groom and bride have to wear white and fresh clothes representing the purity of their souls. While the shaman is officiating the wedding, the couple is placed on a circle marked on the earth, stone or sand (depending on where they are), in front of a cross that means both the elements and the four cardinal points, then they are asked to give their offerings which are made of flowers, seeds, fruits, copal, corn, and chocolate.
One day before the wedding, the couple is asked to purified their souls on a Temazcal bath, which is made with water steam mixed with medicinal plants.
Where does it take place?
A big advantage is that there is no place strictly established because it depends on the couple; basically, the place they have to look for has to be in a natural space and mystical for them, so it can be done on the beach, on a cenote, on a cave or at an archaeological place.
Who officiates the wedding?
This traditional celebration is always officiated by an Ah Men o ajq’ij or better known as a priest or a shaman. It has to be someone that knows how to lead the couple and their family into the tradition so they can receive the Mayan gods and mother earth’s blessings, all of this will be done on its original Mayan tong, and if needed, there is always the option of a translator.
